What is Microneedling (Skin Pen); and why should you add it to your monthly skin care routine?!?!

Microneedling... We've all heard about it, usually referred to as Skin Pen. But many people don't really understand what it is or why they would want to include it in their skin care regimen. So, what is it?

A SkinPen is a medical grade microneedling device that is used to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars on the face or body. Microneedling has been used safely for years for clients of all skin types; treating and improving acne scars, loose skin, wrinkles, pore size, improving skins texture, and discoloration or pigment problems. It's also referred to as collagen induction therapy (CIT), or percutaneous collagen induction (PCI).

Sounds great right? But how does microneedling work? Does it hurt? What kind of results can you expect? How often should you have it done?

How does it work?

Microneedling uses your bodies natural response to slight injury, caused by pinpricks from tiny needles, which makes your skin respond by making more collagen. This new, more collagen rich, skin has a smoother texture and a more even tone as a result. Which gives your face and neck (even your chest or 'decollete' ) a more youthful and dewy appearance.

Does it hurt?

While microneedling can be slightly uncomfortable we use a very powerful topical anesthetic to numb the skin prior to performing the procedure. Most of our clients experience very little, if any, discomfort during the procedure. As the numbing effect wears off after your procedure you will likely feel like you've got a bit of a sunburn, warmth and tenderness; and we definitely recommend avoiding exposure to the sun for the rest of the day. We tell our clients to go home and kick their feet up, pamper themselves for the day. The redness and very minor swelling will subside fairly quickly.

What kind of results can I expect?

Because microneedling creates micro injuries to the skin it instantly begins to trigger the body's natural healing process and makes your body generate new collagen and elastin cells. Most clients begin to notice a difference within 2 weeks of their first treatment, though the MAXIMUM results won't be apparent until 4 to 6 weeks afterward. This is why we recommend to our clients that they take a before picture, and once a week take another selfie. This way you can see the changes as they occur. (Besides, we LOVE to get before and after pictures from our clients so we can see how happy they are with their results!)

How often should I have microneedling done to get the BEST results?

We recommend that you get microneedling once a month; that gives the absolute best results. We will also use hyaluronic acid serum in a lot of cases combined with our microneedling treatments to maximize fine line and wrinkle reduction. If you're not already using hyaluronic acid serum on your face every day there's no better time than now to start! (Nope, not getting paid to say that. It just REALLY helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles like you wouldn't believe!)
